Rape and No Repurcussions

This posting was actually part of my reply to my friend Mr Dipdyuti Chowdhury's post titled "Rape and Repurcussions." Therein he justified that the North Eastern part of India has a much better outlook towards womenfolk and hence women are comparatively safer there than the remaining part of India. Which he was actually true. Very much true.
Both Dipdyuti and I - we are equally disgusted and I am pessimistic about the future/aftermath.
I am penning down my thoughts here. But to start it, first let me quote two oft-repeated jargons that I have heard from my highly educated senior collegues. These will make it clear that perversion sans all educational limits and it prevails at all strata of society:
"When Rape is Inevitable, Enjoy it..."
"As long as you are not caught....Enjoy....But the day you are caught...Dhananjoy**"
**Dhananjoy refers to Late Dhananjoy Chatterjee who was hung a few years ago. He was the last rapist/murdered in India to be condemned to death.
Balance part of my reply / thought was as below:
But there is a practical difference between North-East and also in some instances (West Bengal) where mob-lynching once was a developing cottage-industry.
In rest of India (and also now in WB), criminals are first caught by the police.
Once they are caught by police:
1.0> They are secure and safe in jail. Are assured now of 2 square meals a day (govt/tax-payers money). In some central jail they also have TV, play volleyball.
2.0> They will turn rowdies of jail in as the dark falls. Outside they raped a girl. Inside they’ll sodomize young and weaker jailmates. They will be joined by wardens, prison-guards.
3.0> Finally, some of them will be given shelter by the heavyweights/adhikaris. Because they know these elements will come handy in next election. They’ll come out with ready bail.
4.0> In next election/riot, they will rampage targeted areas as per specific instructions from specific quarters.
Hence, in the first place, none will hand them over to the mob. Nobody will give the mob a chance to bash their “every inches.”
Haven’t you seen “No one killed Jessica.” What the character of the cop told? He received 70 lakhs not to torture the arrested killer boy.
Before mob gets a chance, lawmakers will swing into action and prevent the mob from taking the law into hands. And then starts the bargain.
Remember Aruna Shaunbag case?? The rapist (heard now suffering from cancer) served a short period in jail, then went out and served in a private hospital in Delhi for a long time. Remorseless. Somewhere I read that he used to lucidly describe to some of his friends how he enjoyed every moment of his act.
Many of the rapists do share their moments of joy not only with their fellow-inmates, but also with some of the wardens, jailors, who enjoys the lurid stories over a few pegs of strong pegs.
After all, in this chilly winter, what’s a better option to keep your body heat up??
In a rarest of the rare occasion, a young IPS ASP in WB (I think it happened near Barrackpore and his name was Sanjay) handed over the rapist/molester immediately after his capture to the crowd baying for his blood. While the rapist was done to death, the officer was immediately transferred to Training/Computerization Department of Kolkata Police – far away from field duty. I don’t know whether he ever got a promotion or whether he resigned or not. It’s an incident that happened long long ago. The local crowd staged dharna to prevent his transfer, but they were lathi-charged.
Dipdyuti, to make your idea successful, the mob should be fearless enough to catch the beasts first. But to do that, they have to break the cordon of police. Is it possible anymore now…Is Bharat mein??
Remember the dialogue of the villain in movie Akhri Rasta uttered to the hapless heroine whom he is proceeding to outrage…”Chillao…jitna marji chillao…kis ko pukaroge..krishan bhagwanko..woh mahabharat mein aate the…is Bharat me nehi….!!”
Accept the fact and fate. Move on with your life. Stop reading newspaper. Stop seeing TV. Apply for a gun license. Apply for a firearm. In case if your near and dear ones are in danger, fight for them and die. At least ensure that in your lifetime you did not see them savaged. Die for them – there is no other solution.

A nice little resort in Lucknow - Charan's Resorts

This hotel is situated 12 Kms away from the crossing of two highways : The highway coming from Kanpur + The Highway going towards Faizabad (called Faizabad Road here). The hotel is situated 12 Kms along the Faizabad highway as you move from Lucknow towards Faizabad. If you come from Kanpur side, come upto the above-mentioned highway-junction, turn right from the junction – you will be on Faizabad road. Now proceed 12 kms. Ask for a place called Chinhat Resorts. This resort is situated just beside that. Near an under-construction flyover.

My whole-sole purpose of writing one full paragraph as above on the location of this hotel is : This location is the most critical point of this hotel. This is because : There is one more hotel called Charan Hotel situated within Lucknow city belonging to the same group. But this is Charan Resorts. But if you ask anyone in Lucknow after reaching there, some will say “I don’t know”, some will guide you to the Charan Hotel, somebody else will stand right on the Faizabad road and will reply that he doesn’t know where is Faizabad road.
So kindly follow the above-mentioned location-guideline, don’t ask anyone else in Lucknow (not even the rickshaw-pullers who guided me to Charan Hotel). We reached Lucknow by road at 11 pm in night on 14/12/12; then virtually moved in a labyrinth and circle around the city till 1:45 am in night and finally reached Charan resorts at 2:00 am.
Of course I find no fault on Charan Resorts’ part. Mr Rishi all along guided us over telephone. In fact once we called him at 1 am and told him about our plight, he was wide awake, constantly guided us over phone, and called off only after he was assured that we reached the resorts safely.

I assure you that the staff of this property (Mr Rishi, Mr Pankaj Kapoor, the adorable Mr Munna Chacha) were wonderful. Once you reach, its’ a wonderful place to stay. Away from the din and bustle and pollution of the city, it’s a nice, sprawling resort, lots of areas over which the complex is spreaded, rooms are really big and spacious, toilets nicely maintained – and at a cost of around INR 2000/- (inclusive of taxes) that too in a peak tourist season in a capital city like Lucknow – it’s a steal, a bargain, a superb choice.

Food (both non-veg/veg/Chinese) are moderately prices and tasty. Room services/bar facility available. Every room has a mini-fridge and a small verandah from where you can see the lawn. Hot water was available in bathroom.

And of course they allowed by small pet cocker spaniel Roxy to stay with us. And dear Roxy was so happy to see such a sprawling lawn and property that for once he forgot he was away from home.

They do have credit/debit card facilities also. Dinner is generally served up to 11 pm. So if you are arriving late, do inform Mr Rishi or Mr Pankaj over phone to keep your dinner ready in your room covered. Also ask them to keep the security guard informed about your tentative arrival. Normally the main gate of the complex closes around 11 pm. After that you have to wake up the guard to get the door opened.
The hotel is having armed security guard manning the complex all-round-the clock. Hence, quite secure. Abundant, secure parking space available within the complex enclosure, which is a premium facility inside Lucknow city.

The only con of the hotel is being located 12 kms from city center, you need to have a vehicle at your disposal to visit places like Hazratgunj, Aminabad etc.

Mariam Ka Maqbara, Agra

This is the neglected cenotaph, the tomb of Mariam, Emperor Akbar’s wife, mother of Prince Salim, who later succeeded Akbar as Emperor Jahangir in Mughal Throne.

Being the mother of the next emperor, Mariam should have basked in the glory of history. Instead she stays largely overshadowed by other luminous presence of other illustrious wives of Akbar like Jodhabai. May be Mariam had to pay the price of her son’s quest for freedom from the overpowering patriarchal influence of a dominating father;  maybe she paid the price for showering her affection towards a lover-son, whose tale of sharing his heart with a danseuse (Anarkali) attained level of legend amongst the ballads of love.

And may be, following that historical tradition, even today, the tomb of Mariam, “Mariam Ka Maqbara” stands in desolation and solitude, isolated at the left hand side of National Highway-2 (Agra to Delhi route), while on the opposite side of the same bustling highway, Sikandra, the tomb of her own husband (Emperor Akbar) basks in glory of attention of tourists coming from world-over.
The only saving grace is: there is a prominent signboard besides the highway that points towards the narrow alley which leads to the tomb, which is situated less than a Km away from the highway with ample car parking space available near the tomb complex.

An overpowering sense of melancholy and solitude touches the heart when one reaches this isolated tomb. Time seems to stand still, a few stray dogs roam about in the manicured garden surrounding the tomb, Archeological Society of India appears to have taken some care and bounded the area with gate; but sadly enough the structure is not as ornate as Sikandra. Or is it that the same is not carefully preserved, the famous Mughal arts so carefully carved out in other Agra monuments, but absent here? The prominent vertical minarets with the distinctive tombs at the top in 4 corners of the monument, a characteristic of Mughal structure is prominent here.
In late afternoon, only a few locales prevail nearby; as the sun sets in, a strange sense of desolation engulfs the place. This beautiful tomb requires more attention from the tourist fraternity and ministry as a whole for a facelift and bringing it to the tourism mainstream so that more people visits it and the place becomes prominent.
